You guys probably know that I switch out my home decor pieces all of the time! I buy pillows, lamps, artwork, vases, etc. seasonally, and switch things out more often than I care to admit.
Ok, I don’t actually care about admitting it- sometimes it’s daily!
And a lot of those items are on the “save” side.
But with the saves, I mix in home pieces worth splurging on, and that’s what we are talking about today!
home pieces to invest in:
Just the other day I was thinking about the big-ticket items we bought after building our house in 2014 (some even before,) and how I still have every single one of them.
Which led me to writing this post.
Because if you invest in these 7 things, it makes switching in and out trends, colors, etc. WAY easier.
Now before we get to the big 7, I want to clarify that these 7 things don’t need to happen today.
We had an IKEA couch and chairs for YEARS before we had the money to invest in a higher-end sofa.
These investments take time for most of us! I’m just saying if you have a budget to “splurge” on a few pieces, this is where I would do it.
home pieces worth splurging on:
1. sofa/sectional

This is the BIG one, my friends – a good sofa or sectional! We have had our Pottery Barn PB Comfort sectional for over 11 years.
We had it as our main sofa for over 10 years, and now it lives on in our bonus room. It still looks amazing, is still super comfortable, and I would still recommend it 100%!
We added to our Pottery Barn sectional family last year with our Pearce Sectional, and just like the PB Comfort, we love it!
And the best part?
I know it will still be amazing in 2032 if we still want it around (crazy, I know!)
2. area rugs

Now I’m not saying you should go splurge on all of your area rugs. We have several affordable rugs throughout our home!
But I think you should splurge in the rooms you use the most. For us, that is our living room, kitchen and mudroom.
I splurged on our Pottery Barn Chunky Wool Jute Rug over 8 years ago, and it still looks amazing.
We walk on it all day/every day, and it has held up extremely well.

I also splurged on a kitchen runner almost 4 years ago, and I have no idea what took me so long!
It is soft under foot & adds just the right amount of coziness to the space.
My Pottery Barn runner is no longer available; however, it is the same size and very similar to the runner linked in this shot.
Vintage rugs are one last area rug that I think is 100% worth splurging on.
We have one in our mudroom/laundry room below, which I love.

Vintage rugs are so great for kitchens, mudrooms & laundry rooms, because they are super durable, and can even be taken outside and hosed off!
And because it is vintage, mine is one-of-a-kind.
But I love The Vintage Rug Shop, Etsy, and Revival Rugs for vintage rug shopping!
3. bar/counter stools

Another one of our first purchases were these West Elm barstools.
You guys, we sit on them daily, and have for over 8 years, and I am not exaggerating when I say they still look brand new!
And they are super sturdy. Zero issues with them after thousands of hours of use.
4. bed/mattress

Ok, this is another big one! We bought our Pottery Barn Bed in 2010, and we still have it!
It sadly is no longer available, but the one linked in this shot is similar.
As far as mattresses go, we are lucky to be married in to mattress royalty 🙂 (my brother’s wife owns and runs mattress stores with her parents,) so we are completely spoiled with the best mattresses. That being said, I still thing a splurge is in order when you are talking about your sleep!
p.s. If you are local to Oregon, or live in Hawaii, I’m sure you know my sister-in-law as the BedMart girl!
p.s.s. I’m adding bedding to number 4! You guys, i have never considered splurging on high-end bedding until very recently.
We sleep on this percale bedding, and I cannot recommend it more. I chose it because it was recommended for hot sleepers, which is me. I will admit I was a bit skeptical, but they were right! I seriously have not woken up once sweating since making the switch.
5. bedside tables

Remember the Pottery Barn bed from above? Well we bought our Pottery Barn bedside tables at the same time.
Another reminder that if you buy high-quality, classic furniture, you will have it forever!
And because we’ve had them for over 12 years, they are no longer available. The nightstands linked here are similar.

I also need to mention that when we did a makeover on our guest bedroom in 2020, the bed and the bedside table were our two major splurges.
When you splurge on your bedroom furniture you can save on items like bedding & decor and still get a high-end look!
You can find our guest bedroom nightstand and bed here.
6. dining room table

Our West Elm dining room table was one of the first things we bought after building our home.
It is still going strong 8 years later.
It is well-built, substantial, and has stood the test of time design-wise.
Someday I will switch it out for a round table (on my wish list,) but when I do, it won’t be because our current table isn’t holding up. It still looks brand new!
And when you splurge on a dining table, you can save on dining chairs, making it easier to switch them out if a trendy style catches your eye.
7. accent chairs

The last of the home pieces worth splurging on? Accent chairs.
I say if you have the money for a nice chair or two, do it in your main living area.
We have had our Serena & Lily chairs (that are sadly no longer sold) for YEARS.
And they are still one of my very favorite things.
And, they are definitely the most asked about item in my home, which leads me to believe, I’m not the only one who loves them 😉 !
I’m linking similar-to-my- chairs here.
