FAQ
Bar-height stools typically feature seat heights ranging from 28-32 inches in height, designed to work with tables that are between 40-42″. On the other hand, counter stools usually have seat heights of 24-27 inches, suited for countertops or tables that are 36″ in height.
I think if you have a small area where your counter stools will sit, go with a backless stool. They can be tucked under the bar/countertop, giving you more space to move around.
We went with backless stools in our kitchen because of this. We don’t have much room between our kitchen island and our sectional in our living room, and I think if I put stools with backs in there, it may overwhelm the space.
A good rule of thumb is to leave 10-15 inches of space between each stool.
Our counter stools have 12″ between each, which allows for plenty of room for people to get in and out.
